The National College for Motorsport (NC4M) will be opening a brand new purpose built £1.5m facility based at the heart of British Motorsport Racing at Silverstone in September 2016 as part of plans to increase the specialist skills training available to an additional 240 students by 2021.
NC4M, run by Tresham College of Further and Higher Education, currently trains full time students and apprentices from across the UK to train for a career in Motorsport and High Performance Engineering industry at one of the UK’s most prestigious venues.
Past students have gone on to work with a range of motorsport champions across the world including Formula One teams Lotus, Red Bull, Force India, Manor and Mercedes where they lead teams to prepare cars in the workshop and work at the race track during races and testing.
The new £1.5m facility is at Silverstone Park – the high-tech engineering business estate located next to the Silverstone Formula One circuit being developed by property manager MEPC. It is in addition to premises that the National College for Motorsport already occupies at Silverstone Park. The 7500 sq ft facility will consist of two fully equipped workshops and classrooms and has been designed by GSS Architecture to ensure that the space is suitable to combine the practical and theoretical training of full time students and apprentices in the motorsport industry.
Kier Construction began working on the brand new site, built by Silverstone Parks, in May to ensure that the new premises will be ready to open in September 2016.
David Higham, Vice Principal at Tresham, stated:
“We are really pleased to be able to expand our motorsport training provision so we can welcome additional full time students and apprentices from across the world to benefit from the specialist training that we provide at the National College for Motorsport.
Our industry experienced staff work alongside race teams to the design the curriculum for our students and apprentices to ensure that they are work ready and progress well with their future employers”.
MEPC’s Roz Bird, Commercial Director for Silverstone Park, commented:
“This is wonderful news in terms of the skills agenda and a real inspiration for youngsters – particularly given the National College for Motorsport’s proven track record at Silverstone Park for producing some of the best-qualified and most successful young mechanics in motorsport today, both at national and international level.
“It is fabulous to see the College expanding into new premises at Silverstone Park which MEPC, as part of its ongoing development at the estate, constructed as a speculative build project. We’re delighted the College is to take on occupancy of this building. The College’s students are going have Delta Motorsport – one of the UK’s most respected automotive engineering consultancies – and legendary motorcycle manufacturer Ducati (UK) as neighbours. Furthermore they will be based right next to the Silverstone Formula One circuit. What a fantastic place to learn their trade and build an invaluable network of contacts for their future careers.”
